James 4:13–17 NLT

“Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” 14 How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. 15 What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” 16 Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil. 17 Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.”

The Bible teaches us a lot. It teaches us to love and honor God above all else. It teaches us that we are to submit our alleged control to God’s actual sovereignty. It teaches us ways that we should interact with each other. Once you know, you know.

James is reminding us that you cannot un-know what you have been taught. The truth is, we sometimesact as though we never learned. Maybe we have forgotten. James won’t let us get away with that. I hear my father’s voice from decades ago, “Vicki Lynn, you know better than that!” He wouldn’t let me get away with much, either. James and my dad remind us that if we have been told how we should behave and then fail to do so, it is a sin. As a child, it felt like a double failure. Not only did I mess up, but disappointing my parents made it even worse. It is still kind of like that. I do not want to be a disappointment to my Heavenly Father, either…something to pray about.

Don’t forget to look for the Lord today. Vicki H.
