Matthew 6:28-33 NLT

28 “And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, 29 yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. 30 And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? 31 “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ 32 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. 33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”

Worry is a thief. Worry steals the present and clouds the future. It undermines everything we think and do, leading to confusion or paralysis. Worry is a waster. It wastes time and energy. Worry is a destroyer. It destroys our peace of mind. Worry breeds fear. Fear is the state of mind that builds a barrier between you and your Father in Heaven. Throughout scripture we are repeatedly told not to be afraid. We are also told repeatedly to whom we belong. When we get drawn into the quagmire of worry, we are swept away from all the assurance and promises of hope made for each of us by our Savior.

Worry is hard to avoid. It is a purely human thing. Most of us can’t help but think about the worse case scenarios of any given situation. It takes intentional focus to stop the worry juggernaut from running away with us and crushing our spirit. This passage can serve as an excellent reminder of how God wants us to live our day to day lives. Worry cannot change the future. It can only poison the present…something to pray about.

Don’t forget to look for the Lord today. Vicki H.
