1 JOHN 4:10 – 12

10 This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.11 Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. 12 No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us.

“Surely,” John says. It is just that plain and simple. We were created for love. The idea is that we would love each other in the very same manner that we are loved by Our Creator. We were created to love and watch over the earth and seas and all that God created. We were, above all, created to love God.

Since we opened the door to guilt and shame and greed and sin, it has been much harder to fulfill that basic purpose. Our time is dominated by self. Our energy is drained by pre-occupation with our own lives and our own inner circle. If there is anything left over, we may feel a twinge for our fellow man. This is the sad state of affairs in which we find ourselves. We can clearly see what is being described by John and so much of the New Testament. We owe a debt that can never be repaid. What we can do is model our lives on the One who paid that price. We can reflect that immeasurable, never-ending love. We can remember that God loves that other person as much as he loves you. If we can wrap our minds around that, we can treat each other with respect and dignity. We can show kindness and compassion. We can act like loving children of Almighty God…something to pray about.

Don’t forget to look for the Lord today. Vicki H.
