 John 4:39-42

39 Many Samaritans from the village believed in Jesus because the woman had said, “He told me everything I ever did!” 40 When they came out to see him, they begged him to stay in their village. So he stayed for two days, 41 long enough for many more to hear his message and believe. 42 Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not just because of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the Savior of the world.”

Do you believe everything you hear? We have to be honest. The sad reality is that lots of people have a very tenuous relationship with the truth. Much of social media is proof positive of that! The need for discernment, for the ability to rationally and critically evaluate information, is more important than ever, if for no other reason than the sheer volume of stuff coming at us. To complicate matters, we all process the world based on the filter of our own experiences.

I give credit to the people of that Samaritan village. Imagine that a woman, marginalized for her dysfunctional history with men, comes blowing through the streets, raving about meeting The Messiah. The testimony she must have given was so clear and convincing that many believed. That led them to seek more information about the mysterious traveler. Jesus spent two days with these villagers and Scripture tells us many more came to believe. But, how different might the story have been if that woman had not played her part?

In a world filled with fabrication, falsehood and fallacy, are you playing your part? If there was ever an example of a messenger who appeared to be ill-equipped, it was the Samaritan woman at the well. Jesus did not choose a well-respected pillar of the community to reveal his identity. He chose a damaged human being. If she had the nerve to share her extraordinary encounter with Christ, we should be able to talk about it, too…something to pray about.

Don’t forget to look for the Lord today. Vicki H.
