 Thoughts on last Sunday's text...

Acts 2:1-8 - New International Version

2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?

I have always been fascinated by the idea of the "tongues of fire." What can the fire signify? I guess for me, it is the character of fire.  The fire consumes that which no longer matters, all the hollow stuff that the love and guidance of the Spirit easily replaces. The fire illuminates the darkness looming in the shadows caused by the guilt and regret we try to hide away. The fire ignites a passionate response to the incredible gift of grace our Savior has given freely to every one of us. The fire burns away all the pretenses that isolate us, one from another. Once we acknowledge the indwelling Spirit of God, we can begin to see our intended place in this world and our hope for the next...something to pray about.

Don't forget to look for the Lord today,
Vicki H.
