1 Samuel 3:1, 19-21 -  New Living Translation

3:1 Meanwhile, the boy Samuel served the Lord by assisting Eli. Now in those days messages from the Lord were very rare, and visions were quite uncommon.

19 As Samuel grew up, the Lord was with him, and everything Samuel said proved to be reliable. 20 And all Israel, from Dan in the north to Beersheba in the south, knew that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of the Lord. 21 The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh and gave messages to Samuel there at the Tabernacle.

We like to think that the free will granted us by God Almighty means we are in charge. Whether we acknowledge it or not, God takes control whenever it’s suits his plan. This is his world. Wherever we are in our lives, God can use us to accomplish his will. Take Samuel for instance. Pledged to God’s service before he was conceived, son of a second wife, Samuel was made servant to the high priest. God chose Samuel from all his people to become the messenger who would speak to the people on his behalf. Throughout the Old Testament, God repeatedly sends wake-up calls to the people of the twelve tribes to turn away from the false gods of their neighbors and return to him and him alone. These chosen messengers are often ordinary people, people like you and me.

Just as in those days, messages meant for the whole nation from the Lord are very rare and visions are very uncommon. That does not mean that God does not speak to you and me. That does not mean that we are not called to serve him. Like the young Samuel, we may not understand just who is calling us and for what purpose. Keep listening…something to pray about.

Don’t forget to look for the Lord today. Vicki H.
